The UK's Gambling Commission said that it would be keeping an eye on developments such as virtual truth to make sure that they did not motivate excessive gambling.

Using virtual truth headsets, integrated with GPS racetrack data, it is giving consumers the chance to view the race from the jockey's viewpoint.

"Currently you place a bet and very little occurs in between that and the outcome," stated Crispin Nieboer, William Hill's director of development.

"We wish to bring clients closer to the sporting action, to experience the adventure of the ride."

To evaluate the possibilities, the team at William Hill labs developed a 3D mock-up of Kempton Park racecourse and collected live information, by means of GPS trackers fitted on horses, during a training race at the course.

Combining the data produced a virtual race users can see through either Google Cardboard or an Oculus Rift.

The technology is not yet readily available to the public however was on show at an open day at the company's technology lab in Shoreditch.

Users initially choose the horse they wish to race on. Accompanied by live commentary, users can turn and take a look at other horses along with activating a data screen about the yohaig code horse's heart rate, stride and race position.

"Currently there are some spaces in the data so the horses suddenly speed up in a live race, however we intend to have a proof-of-concept system all set by Christmas," said Mr .

The plan is to launch the service as part of the William Hill app.

"Users can choose the alternative to see the race as a standard video or they can be the jockey," Mr Nieboer stated.

It could also be offered in some betting stores, stated Mr Nieboer, while Google Cardboard headsets were most likely to be offered free at racecourses.

The proliferation of online wagering has been blamed for making it much easier to bet and some feel services such as virtual reality might include to the issue.
